PRESS RELEASE: Mettle Music's superb long player "Honeycomb Lounge" caused a sensation last year with its superb, intricate arrangements, tight production and sheer musicality. Fast-forward to 2003 and the next installment of the Mettle Music story is a new album "Moodswings", penciled for release in September. "Capture", the first release from the album and their first release in over a year (from the development in their production it's obvious they've not been sitting on their back sides!). There are 2 versions from the boys themselves alongside a re-rub from one Mr. Chris Lum. Mettle Music get things going first with Part One, a stripped down beatless arrangement of the track which brings the evocative and original vocal to the fore, backed with amazing live strings and delicate rhodes. Useful for the more creative heads amongst you. Part Two takes a bit of a left turn utilising an original abstract dubby house arrangement with crisp beats and deep sub bass, which plays perfectly against the warm string arrangement. Chris Lum's mix has all the trademark touches that have made him such an in-demand producer. The bass is squelched up and paired back, the vocal is condensed into short hooks which sit on top of his ever-present lush synths and the whole track is turned into the kind of late-night drifting which he does so well. A fitting first single and a sign of the quality on offer from the rest of the album! Distribution: Flute Worldwide +44(0)1932 769760 |

Manchester's Mettle Music have been very quiet of late but that's because they've been hold up in the studio working on their new album, 'Moodswings', the first offering of which is the sublimely haunting, downtempo vocal number, 'Capture'. The original track comes in two versions, the pick of which has to be 'Part 1' with it's melancholic, folk-like feel, seductive lyrics and immaculate vocal delivery. 'Part 2' sees the vocal layered over some dubby beats and spacey FX along with even more acoustic and orchestral elements thrown in for good measure. Chris Lum surprises with a much deeper mix than usual but for those that love the more musical side of house music definitely won't be disappointed by his interpretation. Here the vocal is carried over a cocktail of crisp rhythms, bubbling bass, rhodes fills and lush, sweeping strings. Darran Nugent (Deephouse Network) |

If this is anything to go by then Mettle Music's forthcoming LP 'Mood Swings' looks set to be a gem. In the meantime 'Capture' provides emotive vocals and deep pulsing grooves in abundance via Chris Lum's ultra cool workout. While the original mixes start with a drum free rendition showcasing the melancholy song, part two then twists it all round a reggae style dub complete with stunning effects. 4/5 Greg Fenton Update

Oh my god, somebody's actually written a song. Not just just some words over a bit of music, but a real song that means something to the singer. Part one is a pretty, guitar guitar-led ballad that Pete Gooding is probably playing at Cafˇ mambo as we speak. Part two sees the emergence of a dub-infused house backing but it's with Chris Lum that it becomes most interesteing to this column. He gives the vocal plenty of space and slides in some underplayed breakbeats and a warm 4/4 groove. It's the title track from what could be a very promising album. DJ mag |
